Illustrations (images and line art)
- grayscale images and/or black & white line art preferred
- color printing is possible, but author(s) will bear all additional costs of production
- "figure" is used instead of "plate" in JP; figures should be numbered consecutively through manuscript
- each illustration within a figure is numbered from one (e.g., Figures 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and Figures 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc.)
- figure dimensions (maximum)
– full page 18 cm W x 23 cm H
– double column 18 cm W
– single column 9 cm W
photographic images should appear illuminated from the upper left - resolution (ppi = pixels per inch)
– line art: 1200 ppi preferred; 600 ppi minimum
– photographic image (grayscale or color): 600 ppi preferred; 300 ppi minimum
– halftone (grayscale): 600 ppi preferred; 300 ppi minimum
– halftone (black & white): 450 ppi preferred; 300 ppi minimum - in all cases, Editors reserve right to determine acceptable quality for publication. Manuscripts may be returned to author(s) to improve image quality before being sent out for review.
Submission of digital files
- JP accepts only online submissions; all manuscripts must consist of digital files only
- It is strongly recommended that authors review their images once files are auto-converted to PDFs by the AllenTrack system. Font replacement, repositioning, resizing, and resolution loss have been reported. High quality figures are our goal and authors are advised to contact the editors for assistance if necessary.
- text
– MS Word (.doc) preferred; text (.txt), and Rich Text Format (.rtf) files acceptable
– adhere to manuscript format outlined online in the Instructions for Authors - tables
– MS Word (.doc), MS Excel (.xls), text (.txt), CSV (.csv) and Rich Text Format (.rtf) files acceptable
– tables and appendices should be submitted as separate files, appropriately titled, from the main text - line art
– may be submitted in TIFF (.tif) format (preferred), or as bitmap files (.bmp), or as Adobe Illustrator (.ai)
– must adhere to resolution standards described above - photographic images
– TIFF (.tif) format strongly preferred; may be submitted in EPS or JPEG (uncompressed if possible), or as Adobe Photoshop (.psd) files
– color images should be submitted in CMYK color space
– must adhere to resolution standards described above - supplemental tables and appendices
– authors are strongly encouraged to submit large tables, character descriptions and matrices for posting online rather than for inclusion in the printed version
– may be submitted in any digital format [although text (.txt), MS Word (.doc) or MS Excel (.xls) are often most useful for data distribution and use]
– mention of these files should be made in the text as being archived online in the "Supplemental Data Archive, www.journalofpaleontology.org"
* Please note that CorelDRAW (.cdr) files tend to cause the most problems in AllenTrack when attempting to merge files to create PDFs.
